that paul ryan and mitt romney are stumping there today. >> i'm curious, mike, why the president isn't able to just stay in the white house. is it because the oval office duties beckon too much? or does he go to virginia because he wants to do a campaign stop here and there? >> reporter: i think it's got a lot to do with it. it's a two-fer. there are no public events on the president's schedule in virginia. there were no events in nevada we were told about. but he did go to hoover dam, has photo ops. so it's a side benefit. it's like a camp, a retreat where they can concentrate on what they need to do tuesday night. >> i wonder if he's planning like a five guys outing, you know? >> reporter: could be. he loves his burgers. no questions. >> before i let you go, mike, can i just ask you, the ten or of things going into this debate prep? how stressful do you sense the white house is about this when you combine both the president's performance last week and then joe biden's this? maybe it picked up a little bit they think with joe biden. >> i think there's a sense of relief that biden did what
that goes on between a woman and her doctor. and it was clear that the romney/ryan ticket is in a place that the obama/biden ticket is not. >> well, you made a point that i like to make. we can argue about a lot of issues, as i said. there were a lot of issues debated last night like benghazi, which are vitally important, but not exactly a voting issue. a voting issue is an issue like gun rights to some people who are hunters or sportsmen. they will vote on that issue alone. a lot of women, not just single women, many women are watching very carefully what these male politicians are saying about their rights, and that's how they vote sometimes. >> well, indeed, and as well they should. it's tempting to say that, well, paul ryan might be the extremist here, mitt romney, he's the reasonable guy and he's at the head of the ticket. that's exactly what paul ryan is saying now. well, it's romney's ticket so -- >> depends which day of the week. >> yeah, exactly. but actually mitt romney is not so moderate himself. if you look back at his record, which is really one long series of equivocations
. >> like paul ryan, mitt romney also in ohio today. he is holding a pair of rallies, an indication of how critical the buckeye state and its 18 electoral votes are. president obama in virginia where he'll be preparing for the next campaign. the obama campaign has another tv ad out. it's narrated by none other than morgan freeman, the voice of vee a and the voice of god. >> every president inherits challenges. few have faced so many. four years later, our enemies have been brought to justice, our heros are coming home. assembly lines are humming again. >> and before you start sending your e-mails, the morgan freeman, of course, played god in "bruce almighty," just so you know. >>> the president landed in virginia a few moments ago. we're told he has no public meeting plans. kristen welker joining us. krist kristen, good saturday to you. >> good saturday to you. >> the president hunkering down for debate prep. what are you hearing about what he plans to do a little bit differently this time? >> reporter: well, craig, after that first debate, top obama campaign advisers said they were going
precisely because romney was able to pull off something in his debate that ryan couldn't quite do because romney could -- romney had pandered to the right of the party. he had done it largely rhetorically even though he had not been a really hard right governor of massachusetts because he was constrained by democratic legislature and so he could just forget everything he said on the stump for a while, but paul ryan, his whole career has been being a creature of the world of conservative wing think tanks. he had this record. he crafted a social security privatization plan that was to the right of the plan proposed by george w bush and he couldn't just run away from it and say, no, no, i don't believe in that anymore. he ended up having to sort of defend these things. i think that got him into a lot more trouble than romney got into. >> yeah. i mean, i think that's right. the idea that, you know, sort of privatization or private accounts is an incredibly radical thing, you can argue against this. sweden where i lived for many years has private accounts. it doesn't have to be. it doesn't hav
will the romney/ryan plan help job creation. he didn't answer it. he attacked the obama administration. that's what we see time and time again by the radical romney plan is that they have no specifics. the fact of the matter is over the last 31 months, we've had private sector job growth, created 5.1 million new jobs. and as of last friday, we had the lowest unemployment rate we've enjoyed in the last four years. does more need to happen? of course it does. but that's why the president is going to win virginia, because he is talking about growing the middle class out and talking about job creation and strengthening our economy in ways that will invest for the future. he has a plan. the other side doesn't. it's resonating in virginia. and we're going to make history again in virginia and deliver to it barack obama. >> corey, the thinking was at the beginning of this campaign, the thinking was that the governor would be able to essentially run on the economy, that the unemployment numbers and that people's perceptions of the economy, that they were going to be in such shambles that that was go
presidential debate, and this is why mitt romney and paul ryan are spending so much time in the buckeye state. 51%, 45%. they are both there today. we're going to listen to mitt romney live in just a moment. topping our political headlines, though, within the hour, president obama is scheduled to land in newport, virginia, he's on his way to williamsburg where he's preparing for tuesday. he used the radio and internet address to focus on the economy, touting the impact of the bailout. >> to let detroit go bankrupt. i bet on american work and ingenuity and three years later that bet is paying off in a big kwa. today auto sales are higher thain even about been in three years. gm is back. ford and chrysler are growing again. we've created a quart ore of a a million new jobs right here in america. >> mitt romney holding a rally in ohio. this hour. it's about to get under way. in fact, we're going get a live update from the campaign trail in just a moment. in their weekly address, republicans also talking about the economy. it was delivered by oklahoma congressional candidate mark wayne mullet. >>
ryan left for him to exploit when he faces mitt romney? >> i think what you're going to see is he's going to ask for specifics on tuesday night. he's going to push him on the tax plan. he's also going to push the famous 47% line. you know, democrats really were upset that he didn't use that line of attack before. vice president biden sort of opened the door for him to do that on tuesday. i think you're going to see more a more aggressive obama take that stance a little more. >> but the fact that the president didn't go after him during the debate on the 47% and the fact that mitt romney first thing out of the gate, the next morning, was was saying it was a mistake, that was wrong of me to say that, is that going to blunt the effectiveness of the president using that? >> i don't think so. they've been attacking him. they've been saying this is a choice. he doesn't speak for the middle class. their side does. so i think that you're going to continue to see that line of attack from them. >> okay. david. what about the libya attack question? i mean, how is the administration been appr
't figure out a week before which is how to deal with the ryan/romney ticket on taxes, medicare and social security. the strategy, thus far has been to trap you in thickets of ambiguity. you can't say it is 5 trillion because we haven't told you how we will pay for it. what biden said over and over is these guys have a voucher plan. ryan supported privatization and who do you trust? he did a very good job. as he got in to details on the tax rate of when it began to get too weedy stepping out and saying just before you tune out, america, just think of the choice you are being offered here. these are not equal parties with equal histories and the fak that paul ryan says his plan, his medicare plan from 2012 is more modern than the plan from 2011, he's still the guy with the plan in 2011 that dissolved traditional fee for service medicare and replaced it entirely with private plans. >> my favorite 20th century rely about the voucher is him saying it is a piece of paper you get in the mailbox. i get vouchers for discounts at stores every day in my e-mail. there's no piece of paper involved. >>
and fit. i couldn't help it. but romney is a rising star in the republican party. when paul ryan met up with joe biden on thursday, it brought this to mind. >> release it. on thursday, biden smiled, zingers on even the most steadfast of the undecided voters. >> try to scare people from voting for you. you see, i understand -- >> do you have the specifics? >> that's what we do. >> thank heavens we have these sessions in place. >> oh, god. >> this is a plan that's bipartisan. jack kennedy lowered -- >> oh, now you're jack kennedy. >> that is so funny. but in all seriousness, folks, this is a guide but it's also a call to action because at the end of the day, one or two debates shouldn't inspire an entire election. voters need to look at the candidates' record and their platform to make a decision. more importantly your vote matters, but if you're undecided and you don't show up to vote or you can't decide between these two candidates, then come november 6, we may just get the government that we deserve. at the table, glen johnson, politics ed tort at politicsboston.com. and thea butler, r
